For the first time in British Columbia, a Junior Invitational Provincial Tennis Championship was held at the Central Park Tennis courts in Burnaby on May 22/23, 2015.

Sixteen teams (8 boys and 8 girls) gathered for a chance to compete for the provincial banners traditionally given to the winning school. The boys and girls played in separate tournaments, with the teams being divided into two pools of 4 teams each.

Pool play was held on the Friday with each team playing 3 matches. The competition was close, rallies were long, the competitive spirit was alive and well, and the tie breakers were numerous. After a long day of tennis the rankings in the pools had been decided. On the girls side the semi -finals would be Crofton versus West Point Grey, and Brentwood versus Glenlyon Norfolk. Both matches featured tiebreakers and super-tiebreakers, but as the last point was won, the final would be West Point Grey versus Glenlyon Norfolk. On the boy’s side, the semi-finals would pit Brentwood against Southridge, and the St. Georges Saints versus the St. Georges Knights. As with the girls, the boy’s matches were tightly contested, with Brentwood and St. Georges Saints emerging victorious to advance to the final.

The finals featured more good tennis and long rallies. The girls match was another close affair with the Glenlyon Gryphons claiming the championship. The boy’s championship match featured plenty of good shot making and hustle with the St. Georges Saints claiming the boy’s title.

The Provincial Junior Tennis tournament was enjoyed by all participants and featured good, close competition and fine sportsmanship. If we can get more juniors competing and more schools offering junior programs, the game of tennis in the junior and senior high schools will continue to grow and improve. We look forward to being able to host another junior provincial tournament next year with hopefully more teams.
